Frequently Asked Questions

Sustainability is complex and constantly changing – below are some common questions we get from our clients. If there’s still anything your still curious about – just drop us a line. We’d love to talk to you.

What is carbon accounting?
Carbon accounting is the term used to describe the calculation of an organisation’s carbon footprint. It includes the direct and indirect (i.e. supplier) emissions of the organisation. Carbon accounting is split between three scopes: 1, 2, and 3. These scopes are defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
Why should my organisation do its carbon accounting?

Many organisations are being asked by their customers and stakeholders how they are incorporating climate into their business practices. They are also being asked to share how carbon intensive their products and services are. Carbon accounting is the first step to understanding where your emissions stand so that you can make a plan to reduce those emissions over time.

Are there regulations around carbon accounting that I have to comply with?

For many SME’s, there is currently no regulatory requirement around carbon accounting and reduction. However, this is expected to change. SME’s represent a significant portion of the market across varying sectors, and therefore are responsible for significant contributions to global CO2 emissions. Governments will see this as an opportunity to reduce national emissions by implementing regulations to SMEs.

Why is software useful in carbon accounting?
The biggest challenge to carbon accounting is data – what data is required, where it’s located in the business, and what format it’s in. With software, we can automate a lot of this and make it easier to update your carbon footprint on an annual basis.
Why do I need a carbon management plan?

While carbon accounting allows you to understand where your emissions are today, a carbon management plan helps you plan for the future. It can help guide your organisation in setting targets, embedding climate into your organisation’s strategy and decision-making, and help you share your sustainability journey with your stakeholders and employees.
