E-Waste Impact Reporting Season: How To Calculate Avoided Emissions

Share:

If you’re an electronics processor, it’s that time of year—impact reporting season. Now is a good time to estimate the avoided emissions achieved through reuse and recycling in 2024.

Bloom has three years calculating avoided emissions down to the individual customer order level. Here’s what we recommend to ITADs and recyclers:

  1. Use an independent methodology – This builds trust in your results and ensures transparency.
  2. Rely on publicly available emissions factors – Transparency matters, and using recognized data sources strengthens credibility.
  3. Acknowledge limitations – No reporting system is perfect. Highlight any challenges to show you’re aware and working to improve.
  4. Outline your next steps – Share what you plan to do in the coming year to build on your impact.
  5. Set long-term goals – Define clear sustainability targets for the next few years to show commitment and progress.

Impact reporting might be facing criticism right now – but sustainability is a journey. And the best way to engage customers, colleagues, and investors is to be open about your achievements, how you calculated them, and where you’re headed next.
