What is carbon accounting?

Carbon accounting generally refers to activities associated with measuring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with a companies business activities and value chain.

What is the GHG Protocol?

The GHG Protocol establishes comprehensive global standardized frameworks to measure and manage greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from private and public sector operations, value chains and mitigation actions.

What is Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions?

Scope 1: Direct emissions from owned or controlled sources
Scope 2: Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy
Scope 3: All indirect emissions (not included in scope 2) that occur in the value chain of the company

Do I need to measure Scope 3 emissions?

Yes, you will need to measure Scope 3 emissions – in particular Categories 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 8.

3- Fuel – and energy – related activities (not included in scope 1 or scope 2)
4- Upstream transportation and distribution
5- Waste generated in operations

What data do I need to use to calculate my emissions?

Scope 1
– on your energy (gas) bill: “what is your spend amount?”
– on your company mileage: “what is your total fuel spend?”
– “What spend have you made on any refrigeration tops ups if any?”

Scope 2
– On your energy Bill: “what is your electricity spend?”

Scope 3
– Goods purchased, Capital goods purchased, Other fuel purchasers, Upstream and downstream transportation costs, Waste reporting and leased assets, all from finance department & basic spend records for accounts.

We’re a small business. Do we need to complete carbon accounting?

Every business, regardless of size, should complete carbon accounting. It is becoming the standard for companies whether it being asked by their clients, investors, or part of a regulatory requirement.

Can we share the results with other customers too?

Of course. The results in the Bloom Platform are downloadable and shareable.

Do I need to use your solution or can I use an alternative provider?

We have designed this product and commercial offer to be simple to use and highly cost effective. Should you wish you may use an alternative software solution. We recommend that it aligns with the reporting requirements of THG.

Do I only have to do carbon accounting once?

Carbon accounting is an annual exercise. Your business, or the businesses of your value chain, may change which will have an impact on your carbon accounting. You may also implement carbon reduction actions, in order to measure these you will need to update your carbon accounting regularly.

How long does carbon accounting take?

The length of time to perform a GHG assessment varies by organisation. However, we are committed to work with you to help you understand what data you will need and from where this data sits in the organisation. Our data request system makes data collection streamlined and efficient.

What are science based targets?

Science-based targets give companies a clearly-defined path to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C. They define how much and how quickly a business must reduce its emissions to be in line with the Paris Agreement goals.

Who is the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)?

The SBTi defines and promotes best practice in emissions reductions and net-zero targets in line with climate science. Develops standards, tools and guidance to enable companies and financial institutions to set science-based targets in line with the latest climate science.

What is greenwashing and how can I avoid it?

Greenwashing is the practice of making false or misleading claims about how a company’s products or strategy is environmentally friendly, sustainable or ethical. The EU has released a proposed new law on green claims that addresses greenwashing to protect consumers, and the environment. More information can be found here.

About THG Partnership in Action

THG Partnership in Action, or ‘PACT’, is a new initiative focused on collaboration with suppliers to foster a culture of sustainability while mutually decarbonising operations and leaving the world a better place than it was found. The Group’s science-based targets were officially validated by the SBTi in September 2023, encompassing mandatory Scope 1 and 2 reductions and aiming for an 85% participation of THG’s suppliers with science-based targets by 2027, alongside a 90% reduction in absolute Scope 3 emissions by 2040. THG acknowledges that achieving their Net Zero target by 2040 hinges on collaborative efforts and supplier participation, recognising the imperative of collective action for meaningful impact.
