Launching the UK’s First Certified WEEE Reuse Carbon Certificates with Appliance Recycling Group

Overview

Bloom ESG and Appliance Recycling Group have joined forces to launch the UK’s first certified carbon certificate programme based on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) reuse operations, setting a new industry standard for measurable, verifiable climate impact in the circular economy.

Challenge

Despite the significant environmental benefits of reusing electrical appliances, the sector lacked a robust, transparent system to quantify and certify the carbon savings achieved by extending product lifecycles. This gap limited both recognition and financial incentives for circular practices at scale.

Solution

Through this pioneering partnership, Bloom ESG and Appliance Recycling Group are developing high-integrity, ISO 14064-certified carbon certificates—known as insets—generated from CENELEC-accredited preparing-for-reuse and logistics operations in Birmingham. Each certificate represents one tonne of CO₂e avoided by keeping over 60,000 major domestic appliances in use annually, rather than sending them to landfill.

Key features include:

  • Third-party verification and ISO 14064-certified methodologies for global credibility and trust.
  • Full digital traceability via Bloom ESG’s carbon inset registry, ensuring transparency and preventing double counting.
  • Locally relevant, high-impact certificates that align with growing demand in the voluntary carbon market.

Impact

  • Systemic Change: The programme reframes how circular economy achievements are measured and rewarded, empowering organisations of all sizes to contribute meaningfully to net zero.
  • Market Innovation: As the first of its kind in the UK, the initiative provides a clear, auditable incentive for technology reuse and positions Appliance Recycling Group as a national leader in sustainable appliance management.
  • Scalable Model: The pilot launches in May 2025, with the first certificates expected by September 2025, paving the way for broader adoption across the sector.

“Our partnership is founded on a shared vision: to make carbon savings tangible, measurable, and certifiable at scale. By combining our expertise, we are unlocking new pathways for climate action and reframing how circular economy achievements are communicated—credibly and practically.”
